Campaign to Protect Rural England - Somerset

CPRE Somerset fights for a better future for the English countryside. We cover the administrative county of Somerset and our volunteers work hard to protect, shape and enhance a beautiful, thriving countryside for everyone to value and enjoy. We have around 700 members who are united in their love for Somerset’s landscapes and rural communities.  Together we stand up for the countryside, so it can continue to sustain, enchant and inspire future generations.

Unlike many environmental charities, CPRE has no vested interests – we own no land, rely solely on donations and grants, and are politically independent. We make decisions with the head not the heart, as much as we love the countryside, and we are possibly the only green group which has a completely holistic approach. Planning, in particular, is all about looking at the bigger picture, and our wide remit means we have to consider the whole of the country – rural and urban – when creating policy.

Somerset CPRE has active district groups in Mendip, and Sedgemoor. South Somerset, Taunton Deane and West Somerset are dormant at present but if you would like to help get these groups going, we would love to hear from you!

We’re an environmental charity, with over 200 local groups, a branch in every county and 55,000 members, and supporters – including more than 2,000 affiliated parish councils.

Here in Somerset, we have around 750 members and a small team of volunteers who work hard to try to stand up for our countryside.

CPRE Somerset is run and managed by a dedicated group of volunteers from across Somerset.

Our trustees meet every couple of months to share their experience of significant planning issues and to steer the future of the branch.  Notes from recent meetings can be found below.
